The Annunciation

Bethans story

After Mary, daughter of beloved Anne became bethrothed to a carpenter named Joseph we where all very excited that she would begin a new life.
My Mother and I had been chosen along with my father to help the newly betrothed in their journey and happy future together.

Then one night, a warm night, I was so restless and I had heard a noise from below that disturbed me. I was concerned that my lady Mary, may be in danger so I hurried down the stairs to see who it was.
I saw Mary kneeling and smiling, a strange light had enveloped her. No candles could burn so beautifully the light was so bright and warm, it gave me a strange feeling of peace and love all at once.

I dared to venture nearer to Mary and the light that seemed to be drawing me near to it. "I am the handmaid of the Lord," she whispered to the light "be it done unto me, according to your will" she added, still smiling and still contented to kneel in the ethereal light of pinks and blues.

Then I saw a shadow pass over Mary, it seemed to all the world to be shifting into a man but he didn't frighten me he was so kind and calming and beautiful. Not in an earthly way but in the same way I felt about rainbows and sunrays, he was covering her and then as quickly as he had done this.

The light disappeared and yet Mary seemed to glow with the light as if it was now within her. She turned and smiled at me and took hold of my hand tightly. "My cousin Elizabeth is with child, dear Bethan you must come with us to see her," she insisted. I nodded and followed her back to her chambers, helped her to settle for the rest of the evening and then went to my own chambers.
